Too early of a spring and up and down temps

January and February temperatures were will above normal with several dips into the single digits.  Bees were out flying very early in January and many beekeepers were temped to fed syrup and pollen patties. Feeding too early can cause the queen to start laying too early before nectar and real pollen are available and before the temperatures become steady.

Several beekeepers lost hives due to the too early build up. The queen started laying and the workers would not leave brood to ball-up when temperatures dropped so they froze.

The best thing to due during a early warm up is to make sure they have enough stores or bee candy.

The early warm up brought early pollen. The maples started blooming early February.
