Last Fall I covered area of roughly 690 sqft with sheets of used rubber roofing to kill the grass and weeds. This works well and no need for herbicides.
In April, I removed the roofing, and added a layer of compost

Then I added stone paths
The area was planted with several Bee balm varieties, mints, sunflowers, salvia, dill, cilantro, spinach, kale, broccoli, and kohlrabi. I edged two sides with oregano and thyme.
