Hive dimensions: Les Crowder vs. Wyatt Mangum

Les Crowder Hive:

Front and back pieces are 20.25” top, 9.25” bottom.  Sides are 10.79”. The sides attach to the edges of the front and back.

Front and sizes are made from 10” (9.25”) board

Depth of hive is about 8.25”

Wyatt Mangum Hive:

Front and back pieces are 17.5” top with 11.25” sides, 9” bottom (made from a 1x12” board).  Sides are a 1x12” board

Inside dimensions are approx. 15.75” across the top, 11.25” on sides and 7” across the bottom

Depth of hive is about

Side boards are attached to the inside/back of front and end pieces.

Top bars are 1.75” x 19”

Angle is about 21 degrees, relative to the vertical, with a 9" trapezoid bottom (straight from his book)

I prefer Wyatt's design because the combs are deeper.  Bees tend to like the longer combs and seem to store more honey above the brood when the combs are deeper.

I prefer Crowders shallow design, because combs have a much longer area to attach to the top bar and less height and thus provide far less potential for comb breakage.
